November 12, 2011
Welcome to the 12th Year of Ramp Riot!
We want to thank everyone for taking part in this celebration of FIRST! What has kept Ramp Riot such a successful event has always been the quality of the participating teams. We are grateful for your attendance. Ramp Riot was born in the fall of 2000 with 8 teams in an almost empty gym. The original idea was to hold a scrimmage and train a few rookies. But the teams had such a great time that we decided to play every year.
Now in our 12th year, the goal has not changed. The principal mission of Ramp Riot is to train and inspire everyone’s rookies. We are dedicated to delivering a high-energy event that is a simulation of the regular season. Even though we have grown to 36 FRC teams and 30 FTC teams, we have never forgotten that our rookies still need the spark of inspiration that will keep them in FIRST.
Don’t ever forget that this spark of inspiration starts with YOU!! Keep this in your thoughts as you compete at Ramp Riot. Be strong in competition, enthusiastic in the stands and supportive in the pits. Let’s all get excited for the benefit of our new rookie members!
Thank you again for competing and Welcome to Our Garden!! Have a great day at Ramp Riot 2011!!

Mike Wade Memorial Award: (1:45 PM) FRC Arena
Mike Wade was a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center employee that made a life’s work out of helping children. He also provided the invaluable support, which fostered the growth of Ramp Riot. Mike passed away in the Spring of 2007, leaving a legacy of caring that we all must strive to continue. We honor him at Ramp Riot each year as a patron of our event, a pillar of FIRST and a mentor to many children in need. Each year we ask teams to donate canned goods to the Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard. The team that brings the most cans will win the Mike Wade Memorial Award. Mike gave us all so much over the years. We ask that all teams participate in this contest to honor his contributions to young people everywhere. More details are on the next page.

EVENT INFORMATION
Questions and Help: There will be a general information table in the lobby for your convenience. If you
need further help please see anyone in a blue and gold Ramp Riot Crew shirt or a blue and gold Team 341
Shirt. They will be able to direct you to someone that can assist you. If you need to locate someone in
charge of the event you can approach the food concession manager, event announcer, or information table
for assistance.
Arrival: It is critical that all teams show up on time and notify the check-in table immediately upon arrival.
This will allow us to make the match schedule quickly. Please call 215-740-2739 if you are going to be late.
The match schedule will be made final at 8:30 AM.
Load In: Please bring all team equipment down the loading ramp outside. This area will be marked as
“Robot Load-In”. For the safety of the teams and patrons please do not bring equipment or robots through
the FRC lobby or down the gym steps.
Pit Area: Space is limited in the pit area. Please stay within the boundaries of your pit and be kind to your
neighbors. If you have large banners, displays, or posters, we can find a space somewhere else in the arena
for these items. The Pit Areas should stay clear of obstructions to traffic and sight lines to the field. If you are
having an issue with your pit, please see an event manager or crewmember for immediate assistance.
Robot Repairs: If you need help with your machine or a spare part please go to the Team 341 pit area, an
event crewmember, or approach the announcer for assistance. We will also have a mobile pit crew that will
circulate. If you are traveling without your adult repair team, please let us know in the morning. Please do
not grind metal, solder or use open flames in the pit area. A machine shop is available in the building for
more complicated repairs.
Gracious Professionalism: Fun is the rule of the day. Please act in accordance with the expectations of
Gracious Professionalism. Ungracious behavior directed at referees or event volunteers will not be tolerated
and will be grounds for disqualification from the event. Be kind to your referees, fellow teams, and help
them as needed.
Safety: All team members and their guests are expected to behave in a safe manner and obey all safety
rules (see Safety page). Individuals not acting safely will be asked to leave the event premises.
Inspection: No inspections will take place. However it is expected that all robots will follow the FIRST
guidelines for construction and fairness. The event manager reserves the right to enforce FIRST machine
guidelines at all times.

Food for lunch can be pre-ordered by teams. A pre-order food list is available in this packet and will also be

is allowed in the Circle Gym/FRC Arena at any time.

Arena Seating: Please be seated in the stands during match play. For reasons of safety and courtesy to
fans, please do not stand up at the field rails while robots are operating. Please note that the lower level is
Ramp Riot 2011 Information Pack
reserved for teams, volunteers, and special visitors. The upper level is designated for the general public and
guests of our competing teams. This rule helps keep the competition areas clear for teams and robot traffic.
COMPETITION INFORMATION
Practice Rounds: You will find a practice round schedule in this packet. Practice rounds will
begin at 7:20 AM. If teams miss their practice round, we will attempt to fit them in later if possible.
Teams may use empty practice slots on a first come, first served basis. All practice will stop at 8:30
AM regardless of circumstances. We can’t guarantee that every team will get a practice match.
Qualification Rounds: A qualification round schedule will be generated on the morning of the
event. It is critical that all teams show up on time and notify the check-in table immediately upon
arrival. This will allow us to make the match schedule quickly. Please call 215-740-2739 if you are
going to be late. The match schedule will be made final at 8:30 AM. If you arrive after 8:30 AM
without notifying us, you will not be included in the competition schedule.
Event Timing: Ramp Riot is a single day event with 36 teams, so timing is critical. All matches will
start on time. There will be very little flexibility for teams arriving late to the field, match replays or
long discussions of on-field decisions. All referee decisions are final. Match replays are very rare
and at the discretion of the event organizers and referees. We are here for fun! Gracious
Professionalism will be the rule of the day.
Seeding: This will be the same as a FIRST regional.
Alliance Selections: Selections will be conducted immediately after the 5th qualifying round has
been played for all teams. (Please see the schedule) Please send a representative to the field
immediately following match 27 of the qualifying rounds.
Eight alliances will be created, consisting of four robots per alliance. The top eight seeded
teams will choose their first two partners in the same way as a FIRST competition. The top eight
seeds may not choose among the top eight teams. Please come to the field prepared to make
selections!
A fourth robot will be automatically assigned to each alliance as a back-up team. These
assignments will be made in reverse ranking order. For example the number 8 alliance will
automatically be assigned the top seeded unselected team. The alliance does not have to play this
partner, but they will be considered as part of the alliance for awards. The 4 unselected teams will
be standby robots in case an alliance loses a machine. If a 5th partner becomes a champion or
finalist a special order will be made to supply a trophy after the event.
Playoff Rounds – Playoffs will be patterned after the FIRST regional events. Rounds will be the
best two out of three matches.

• Champions (Team award – 4 teams)
• Finalists (Team award – 4 teams)
• Mike Wade Memorial Award (Food Drive)
